Dragonfly gymnasts

A while back, I wrote a post on ballet moves of Trumpeter Swans, comparing them to those of human ballet artists.  A similar comparison popped into my head yesterday when I was photographing dragonflies.  So many of their perching postures resemble gymnastic/yoga moves.

dragonfly vs gymnast horizontal pose

dragonfly vs human - semi-vertical pose

dragonfly vs human - obelisk pose

Dragonflies typically perch horizontally supported by their six! legs. Humans can do it supported by just two (or even one!) arm. Heck, even granny can do it.

Of course it is far easier for dragonflies to hold such a pose with their light-weight exoskeletons and small body masses than it is for a 100-150 lb human.  Still, have you ever seen a dragonfly do this?

  1. What a fun posting. I’ve often thought that dragonflies look like gymnasts and your wonderful photos prove it. Of course, now I have a challenge to find dragonflies in poses that are impossible for a gymnast to do or, unlikely, find a dragonfly in the poses of the last two gymnasts!

  2. Hah, I love this! Great observation! Kind of makes the feat for humans all the more amazing, that anyone can hold such a pose for any length of time is pretty amazing.
