A colorful nuthatch

This little bird was so intent on extracting seeds from a neighbor’s feeder, it let me walk quite close.  I never realized how colorful White-breasted Nuthatches really are.  Most of the time, they hide their chestnut-colored belly feathers beneath an outer white layer.

Even on feeders, these little birds insist on hanging upside down to extract the seeds.

They really are quite handsome little birds, with the contrasting black cap, gray-blue back, white chest, and chestnut underbelly.

  1. Nuthatches are quite dapper. They are one of the few birds that will let me get close enough to get a good picture. They are quite happy with their upside-down world.

  2. I used to see nuthatches in the UK and I thought they had the most elegant silhouette of the little birds. I’ve never seen any near me in France so I enjoyed seeing your pictures although I think it is a different species than I’m used to.
